Fitness instructor pedals record miles
ORMOND BEACH, June 26 2005 -- A 44-year-old
local fitness instructor pedaled enough miles in 24 hours Friday and
Saturday to beat the Guinness World Record for stationary cycling, his
wife, friends and others who watched him at the YMCA here say.
But whether Martin Vollebregt's name appears in the next
record book depends on confirmation by its publisher.
Vollebregt's wife, Sonya, said in a phone interview Saturday
afternoon he surpassed by 27 miles the previous record of 505 miles
set in 2004 by Ronald Martzloff of Germany.
"He beat the record and still had an hour and 20 minutes.
He did an overall of 532 miles in 24 hours," Sonya Vollebregt said.
She said her husband was experiencing excruciating pain
in one knee, foot and hamstring. He was fast asleep -- and might stay
that way 'til morning -- when a reporter called, she said.
Vollebregt started training about four months ago and averaged
a maximum of 15 miles a week on his stationary bike. His effort to break
the record also was a fund-raiser to assist needy families enrolled
in YMCA programs.
