Male hormones don't make women horny
FEMALE FIRST., July 6 2005 -- Acording
to a report in the Journal of the americam medical association, Male
hormones are not linked to womens interest in sex.
It has been theorised that when women show little interest
in sex, the problem is with low Androgen (Male hormone) levels, but
there has been little evidence to support this claim Dr. Susan R. Davis,
from Monash University in Victoria, Australia, and colleagues note.
Researchers measured levels of androgen in 1020 randomly
selected women and comapred it with their levels of sexual function.
A standard questionnaire, the Profile of Female Sexual Function (PFSF),
was administered to all the participants.
No correlations were found between androven levels and
any area of the questionaire, the team reported. By contrast, a low
level of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) did correlate with low
sexual desire, arousal, and responsiveness -- but the majority of women
with low DHEAS levels did not have low sexual function.
According to the researchers, the results contradict the
idea of using testosterone to treat women with low levels of sexual
desire.
Rather, they say that, taken together with what is already
known, the results suggest that "sex steroids influence female
sexual function," but that there is no specific level of androgens
in women that can be classified as a deficiency.
