News : Indiana Governor Rolls Out Fitness Program

AMONLINE.COM, July 15 2005 -- The governor of Indiana is asking state residents to join him in a workout. On Wednesday, Governor Mitch Daniels introduced INShape Indiana, a new statewide fitness program, according to WISH-TV in Indianapolis, Ind.

The interactive attempt to get people online and in shape offers not only health benefits but incentives, too.

Kicking off INShape Indiana from the National Institute for Fitness and Sport, Governor Daniels said Indiana is listed in serious condition when it comes to being in shape.

INShape Indiana's website allows participants to put together a fitness and nutrition program that best fits the individual.

The governor, who's enlisted big names like George McGinnis, Lyn St. James, and Peyton Manning to chair the fitness surge says it will be tough to get people to change old habits but that it must be done since poor health is hurting the quality of life for everyone.

The principle behind INShape is to get people moving, and eating better. Taking stairs instead of the elevator and encouraging businesses to put healthier alternatives in their vending machines are two simple steps. Participating in sports as a family is another suggestion. Click here for the full report.

Editor’s Insight: It sounds like Mitch Daniels is following the example of Arkansas Gov. Mitch Huckabee, who has become a national celebrity for his efforts to encourage people to get in shape and setting an example by losing 105 pounds.

It’s easy to dismiss these politicians’ efforts as grandstanding for political gain. But in Huckabee’s case, he proved that he wasn’t just acting for the cameras when he took it upon himself to lose more than 100 pounds after being diagnosed with diabetes.

These governors are in line with President Bush’s health initiative. They set good examples for the millions of Americans who are in serious need of exercise. 07-15-05 by Elliot Maras
