KXTV - Sacramento,CA,USA, July 26 2005 -- Saying California's children are facing an "obesity epidemic," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger voiced his support Monday for legislation that would encourage healthier food and drinks in schools.
The governor spoke on behalf of two bills sponsored by state Senator Martha Escutia of Norwalk, a Democrat. Collectively dubbed the "Healthy Schools Now Act," the bills seek to restrict access to unhealthy foods and provide students with more nutritious choices.
Senate Bill 12 would set nutrition standards for foods offered in K-12 public schools, while SB 965 would sharply limit the sale of soda in public high schools. High-sugar soft drinks are already banned in the state's middle schools.
The governor also indicated his support for a pair of other bills related to the health of California children. SB 559, authored by Senator Tom Torlakson, D-Antioch, would put a new emphasis on physical education and impose more stringent fitness requirements for California students. SB 281, by Senator Abel Maldonado, R-San Luis Obispo, would fund development of a program to encourage public schools to include more fruits and vegetables in meal programs.
In addition to indicating his support for bills concerning nutrition and fitness, Schwarzenegger pointed out that his budget already includes extra funds for school lunches. "My budget for the coming year is spending an additional $18.2 million to get more fresh fruits and vegetables into school meals," he said.
